Red Moshannon Downriver Race

The Red Moshannon Downriver Race is held on a remote 7.5-mile section of Moshannon Creek between Peale Bridge near Grassflat, PA and the Route 53 Bridge near Moshannon, PA. The course is listed as Class II+ at moderate water levels; higher water significantly increases difficulty. Water and air temperatures are usually very cold, extra flotation is highly recommended, and swims and bent boats occur in most years.

Registration must be completed by March 14th and no day-of-event entries are permitted. This edition is noted as the 58th running of the race. An awards banquet will follow the race at St. Severin social hall in Drifting, PA where a hot meal will be available for purchase.

Race rules emphasize safety and equipment limits. U.S. Coast Guard approved Type I, III, or V life jackets (no automatic or manual-inflating types) must be worn and bibs must be visible over the jacket. Helmets are required for kayaks, decked canoes, and SUPs. Rudders and skegs are prohibited; pedal or other powered drives are not allowed. SUP racers must paddle from a standing position, with limited kneeling or sitting only for specific maneuvers. Minimum solo paddler age is 16 unless in Youth class; Youth racers must be accompanied by an adult unless preapproved. Organizers may cancel or postpone the race if the Rt. 53 bridge gauge is projected above four feet. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
