Red Dirt Ultra
Red Dirt Ultra is the 11th edition set in Kisatchie National Forest near Provencal, LA. The race uses the Sandstone and Caroline Dormon trail system and travels through longleaf pine forest and stretches alongside the Kisatchie Bayou.
Trails include loose and hard packed sand, rocks, mud, water crossings, long climbs, flowing descents, creek crossings, and extended runnable singletrack. The route follows multi use backcountry trails shared with ATV riders and equestrians, producing a variable trail surface that requires attention to footing and effort.
Distances are approximate and the event offers multiple course options:
- 35K approximately 22 miles
- 33 mile (50K) approximately 33 miles, about 3,000 ft elevation gain
- 66 mile (100K) approximately 66 miles, about 6,000 ft elevation gain
All races share a midnight cutoff. The 100K has an 18 hour overall limit; completing 66 miles within 18 hours implies an average pace near 16 minutes per mile including stops. Aid stations are described as well stocked and staffed by experienced ultrarunners, with vegan options available at the finish and a mid-loop aid station. The event is organized by ultrarunners and emphasizes on-course support and volunteer staffing.
The nearby town of Natchitoches is about 25 minutes from the start and is noted for its brick streets and Cane River lakefront. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
