Event overview

The Pen-Y-Ghent Ultra is a mountain trail ultra held in the Yorkshire Dales, based at Hawes Market House. The event for 2026 is scheduled for Saturday 19 September 2026. The advertised distance is 50 km with a total ascent of 1280 m. The race is held under a Trail Running Association permit and England Athletics competition rules. Participants must be 20 years or older on race day. Entry fees shown are £53 (affiliated) and £55 (unaffiliated), and entries are limited.

Course, support and kit

The out-and-back route follows established trails over the Cam Road to Horton-In-Ribblesdale, includes a summit of Pen-y-Ghent, and returns along the Cam Road. The course is not waymarked beyond fixed finger posts; navigation course notes and a GPX file are provided to entered participants. Ranger Ultras team support is provided at roadhead and hill locations. On-course provision includes water, snacks and hot soup at Kidhow Gate and Horton-In-Ribblesdale. Race HQ offers indoor resting space and a communal hot food option at the finish, and finishers receive eco-style medals and winners’ trophies for fastest male and female. A compulsory minimum kit list is enforced; required items include a backpack, waterproof jacket, warm layers, appropriate footwear, paper map and compass, head torch with a suitable backup, whistle, emergency bivvy, fluids, food and a charged mobile phone.
