Event overview

The Pen-Y-Ghent Ultra is a 50 km mountain trail race based at Hawes Market House in the Yorkshire Dales. The route runs out and back over Pen-y-Ghent, following the Cam Road to Horton-in-Ribblesdale and returning along the same line. The course is not waymarked beyond fixed finger posts. Total ascent for the route is 1280 m. The event is held under a Trail Running Association permit and England Athletics competition rules. Participants must be 20 years or older on race day. Entries are limited.

Logistics, support and kit

Navigation notes and a GPX file are provided to entered participants in advance. There are on-course checkpoints with water, snacks and hot soup at designated locations. Race HQ offers indoor resting space and hot food and drinks at the finish. Finishers receive eco medals and the fastest male and female receive bespoke winners trophies.

A compulsory minimum kit list is enforced. It includes a backpack; waterproof jacket with hood; warm layers; appropriate mountain/fell footwear; an Ordnance Survey type map and baseplate compass; a primary head torch plus an approved backup power/torch option; whistle; emergency bivvy bag; sufficient fluids and food; first-aid kit and personal medication; mobile phone with standard UK SIM; and a litter bag.
