Race for the Reef 5K

The Race for the Reef 5K is a community sports event held at HOST Park (NELHA) in North Kona, Hawaii. Organized by the 365 Hawaii Island Community Fund, this 4th annual event focuses on ocean health and the protection of nearshore reefs. The race provides a platform for families, students, and local businesses to engage in marine environment stewardship.

The course is a 5k out-and-back route on paved surfaces. Participants start near the West Hawaii Explorations Academy (WHEA) and run toward the ocean before returning to the start area. Parking is limited to the small lot adjacent to the academy and along Kahilihili Street. Packet pickup is scheduled for the day prior to the event at the Ridge to Reef Restoration Center lanai.

Participants receive swag bags, and the event includes lucky number drawings for various prizes. After the run, an ocean conservation education area features resource tables with exhibitors. Wellness vendors and local business sponsors also participate in the gathering.

Proceeds from the event support several environmental initiatives. These include the ReefTeach Mineral Sunscreen Dispenser Program at Kahaluu Bay, the Akoakoa Reef Restoration Program for native coral populations, and the Ocean Defender’s Alliance. The primary goal of the event is to raise funds and awareness for conservation efforts throughout West Hawaii. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
