Race for the Reef 5K
The Race for the Reef 5K is a community run and walk presented by the 365 Hawai‘i Island Community Fund. It is the 5th annual event and is dedicated to protecting nearshore reefs, improving ocean health, and supporting community-led stewardship that mālama ʻāina and kai for future generations.
Proceeds support three local programs: the Kohala Center’s ReefTeach Mineral Sunscreen Dispenser Program at Kahaluʻu Bay, the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program focused on native coral restoration, and Ocean Defender’s Alliance for marine protection and education.
The course is a 5k out and back on pavement, beginning near West Hawai‘i Explorations Academy and heading down to the ocean and back. Race packets are available for pickup on February 5 from 3 to 6 PM at the Ridge to Reef Restoration Center lanai. Participants are asked to bring refillable water bottles; a water station with cups will be provided at the turnout point. Parking is available along Kahilihili Street north of Makako Bay Drive.
Post-race activities include resource tables with ocean conservation exhibitors who will provide information and volunteer opportunities. The 365 Hawai‘i Island Community Fund coordinates partnerships with local nonprofits and community groups to strengthen outreach, connect volunteers with organizations, and support civic engagement across the island.
