Race for the Reef 5k - HOST Park, North Kona, HI
The Race for the Reef 5k is a community run/walk presented by the 365 Hawai‘i Island Community Fund on April 25, 2026, at HOST Park (NELHA) in North Kona. The event aims to raise funds and awareness for nearshore reef conservation and ocean health, and it brings together families, students, scientists, cultural practitioners, and local businesses.
The 5k course is an out-and-back on pavement that starts near West Hawai‘i Explorations Academy and follows the road down to the ocean and back. Proceeds support the Kohala Center’s ReefTeach Mineral Sunscreen Dispenser Program, the ʻĀkoʻakoʻa Reef Restoration Program, and Ocean Defender’s Alliance. Prizes for drawings and awards include a one night stay at SCP Hilo Hotel, a Body Glove snorkel cruise, gift baskets, and other items.
Event features include swag bags for participants, lucky number prize drawings, a post-race ocean conservation education area with resource tables, and wellness vendors. Race packets are available for pickup on April 24 from 3 PM to 6 PM at the Ridge to Reef Restoration Center lanai. Participants are asked to bring refillable water bottles; a water station with cups will be available at the turnout point. Parking is available in the small lot next to WHEA and along Kahilihili Street.
