Race for the Planet
Race for the Planet is a community running event on April 19, 2026, held at Battle Acre Park at Fort Fisher in Kure Beach, North Carolina. The event supports the NC Aquariums' mission to inspire appreciation and conservation of the aquatic environment; race registration funds aquarium programs and sustainability efforts.
The program offers in-person and remote participation across multiple distances. The in-person activity follows a route through the Fort Fisher area and a separate one-mile fun run is offered as a non-timed option.
Event distances:
- 5K in-person
- 5K virtual
- 1 Mile fun run (non-timed)
Registrations include a Sustainabili TEE for entries through March 16, made from 100% organic cotton and printed with water-based ink. After that date, participants may select from remaining inventory while supplies last. A no-shirt option is available that directs an additional donation from the registration fee to the aquarium; donations fund initiatives to reduce single-use plastics, improve recycling of hard-to-recycle materials, and expand organic waste composting.
The event materials mention sustainability tips for participants, local partners, and community-focused elements. The organizer is Race for the Planet and the event benefits conservation work tied to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
