Race for Open Space 5K

Event Overview

The Race for Open Space 5K is a fundraising running and walking event in Lewes, Delaware. The Seashore Striders are teaming up with The Open Space Alliance Campaign. The event supports the effort to maintain the Fourth Street Preserve in its natural state, with public access and walking trails.

Distances and Registration

The event features an in-person 5k Run/Walk and a 1-mile "fun walk." It also offers virtual options for both distances. Registration for the in-person 5k starts at $25 with an early-bird rate. Prices increase on April 20, 2026. Registration is available online, on race day beginning one hour before the start, or via mail.

Location and Parking

The event takes place at George H.P. Smith Park at 1 Dupont Avenue. The park has a paved parking lot next to a children's playground and is also the home of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. Additional parking is available at the Cape Henlopen Transportation Office, on surrounding streets, at Beebe Hospital, and at Lewes Elementary School.

Course and Timing

The 5k course is a 3.11-mile route from George H.P. Smith Park to 4th Street, into the Pilottown Development to a turnaround point, and back. The 1-mile walk turns around near the "open space." The event will be chip-timed using the Chronotrack system. The course is marked with arrows and cones, and participants must stay on the marked roads.

Event Details

Pre-registered participants are guaranteed a short-sleeve tech race t-shirt if registered by the Monday of race week. Refreshments and bagels will be available. The 5k features awards for overall and masters male and female winners, plus the top three finishers in 10-year age groups from 9 & under to 70 & over. There are no awards for the 1-mile walk. The event has a no-refund policy but offers options to transfer to a future event, donate the fee, or defer to the following year. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
