Background and fundraising

The event was inspired by a local teen diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and by the Washington, D.C. Race for Hope. Organizers established the Des Moines event to coincide with Brain Tumor Awareness month in May to raise funds for research, bring the community together, pay tribute to those who have passed, and acknowledge survivors.

Race for Hope DSM launched in May 2013 with about 600 participants and raised more than $25,000 that year. Over the past 13 years the event has raised more than $700,000 for brain tumor research. The event is run by an all-volunteer staff that aims to keep costs low so more proceeds go to brain tumor organizations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
