Race For A Soldier
The Race For A Soldier is held in Gig Harbor, Washington, at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA. Organized by the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation, the event aims to raise awareness for the challenges faced by military service members, veterans, and first responders living with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. Proceeds from the event support various programs, including workshops, counseling, and peer support meetings.
Participants can choose between two main distances:
- 12 km run
- 5 km run / walk
The event begins with an opening ceremony before the start of the competitive races. Participants are allowed to use Nordic walking sticks, provided they are mindful of others on the course. To ensure safety, wheels such as bicycles, skates, and skateboards are prohibited, with the exception of registered wheelchairs and official event vehicles. While not strictly banned, the use of headsets or MP3 players is highly discouraged for safety reasons.
The race weekend includes additional community activities, such as a pancake breakfast. Packet pick-up typically occurs on specific dates leading up to the race at a local partner hotel in Gig Harbor. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
