Quiet Silence
Quiet Silence is an evening winter trail event near Lake Mills, Wisconsin, held on a flat crushed limestone rails-to-trails route. The course is wide and described as having almost zero technical difficulty. Trail conditions vary by year and by section; the surface is not plowed and may include clear ground, snow, drifts across open drumlin areas, or soft post-holing.
Distances offered
- 16 miles out-and-back
- 31 miles out-and-back
Both distances use a turnaround at the halfway mark. Aid at the 16 mile turnaround provides fluids (water and an electrolyte drink) and light snacks; a drop bag may be left there and will be returned to the start/finish area, though retrieval timing is not guaranteed. The 31 mile turnaround has a fuller aid station with cold and hot drinks, food, a covered lit tent with chairs and heaters, and volunteers. Portable toilets are available at the start and at the 31 mile turnaround; there is no toilet at the 16 mile turnaround.
All finishers receive a token rather than a medal. The top three men and top three women in each distance receive an additional gift. Organizers do not provide cups at aid stations and ask participants to bring their own vessels. No loud noise makers or on-site alcohol provision are allowed.
Required gear follows DNR safety guidance: two rear-facing and one forward-facing red lights with a blinking option, and at least 10 square inches of reflective material on both the front and back of outer layers. These items will be checked during packet pickup. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
