Event overview

The Purbeck Hill Challenge takes place on Saturday 14 February 2026, starting and finishing at Knoll Beach, Studland on the Isle of Purbeck. The one-day long-distance walk/run uses public rights of way and includes detailed orienteering sections printed on the reverse of the main map. Entries are limited to 100 competitors and entrants may compete solo or as a pair. Entry fees vary by date and by solo or pairs entry; electronic timing dibber hire is available for a small fee.

Courses and format

There are four course lengths, each with an indicated climb and two orienteering options:

  • Super Short: 15 km, 170 m climb
  • Short: 21 km, 400 m climb
  • Medium: 33 km, 660 m climb
  • Long: 41 km, 930 m climb

Each course can be combined with either a Technically Easy or Technically Advanced detailed-orienteering option. The Technically Easy option uses line features and basic map skills; the Technically Advanced option requires experienced orienteering skills. All-control laminated A2 maps are issued, with OS 1:25,000 on one side and detailed orienteering on the other.

Logistics and safety

The event centre is at the National Trust facilities at Knoll Beach (BH19 3AH). Parking is in the National Trust car park and is charged separately. The event is self-supported; competitors must carry mandatory safety equipment which will be checked at the start. Competitors must report to the finish and download whether or not they complete their course. Terrain includes heathland and coastal dunes and may be very wet and muddy at this time of year.
