Event overview

The Purbeck Hill Challenge is a one-day long-distance walk or run held at Knoll Beach, Studland on the Isle of Purbeck. The event uses public rights of way and includes at least one detailed orienteering section. The competition area covers the Purbeck Hills and the Jurassic Coast, including heathland and coastal dune terrain. The event is self-supported; competitors must carry mandatory safety equipment which is likely to include waterproof clothing, compass, whistle, head torch, phone and cash. Entries are limited to 100 competitors.

Courses and format

There are four course lengths with approximate climb figures:

  • 15 km - 170 m climb
  • 21 km - 400 m climb
  • 33 km - 660 m climb
  • 41 km - 930 m climb

Each length can be paired with one of two orienteering options: technically easy (roughly Orange/Light Green standard) or technically advanced (TD5 standard). All course combinations can be run solo or as a pair. Competitors receive an A2 double-sided laminated map (OS 1:25,000 on one side; detailed orienteering areas on the other) and a loose control description sheet. SPORTident dibbers are used to record controls; dibber hire is available for £1.

Practical information

Registration and map issue take place just outside the National Trust café at Knoll Beach. Parking is at the National Trust car park at Knoll Beach; charges apply and are not included in entry. Basic first aid is available at registration. Competitors should expect wet and muddy conditions at this time of year and plan footwear accordingly.
