The sixteenth annual Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd takes place in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, within the J.T. Nickel Preserve, a 17,000 acre privately protected conservation area that runs alongside the Illinois River. The preserve sits in the Cookson Hills and features steep slopes, narrow valleys, spring fed creeks, oak-hickory forest, pine woodland, savanna, shrub land, and prairie.
Event distances include:
- 100 Miler
- 100K
- 50K
- 25K
- 10 Miler
The running course follows gravel country roads with a few climbs and passes grassy prairies, oaks, pines, and tributaries that feed the Illinois River. Tree covered sections show pronounced fall foliage in October. The race is set in Cherokee County and passes near a small community called Pumpkin Holler. Tahlequah is noted for its Native American tradition and history, which the event aims to reflect in newly designed belt buckles and finisher medals.
Organizers describe a network of aid stations staffed by experienced ultrarunner volunteers. Details on aid station locations and services are available from event materials. A gravel ride called the Pumpkin Holler Gravel Grinder is held alongside the running races and shares portions of the same roads, with loop options for different distances.
Registration closes Tue, Oct 13 at 11:59 PM CT. Finishers awards are given to those who meet the published cutoffs and cross the finish line; top three awards apply by category. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
