About the race
The Polar Plunge & Run is a community event at Kure Beach Pavilion, 105 Atlantic Avenue, Kure Beach, NC, held on February 20, 2027. The program combines running and a cold-water plunge on the beach to raise funds for Special Olympics New Hanover County.
Event offerings include:
- 5K, timed event.
- 1 Mile, untimed fun run/walk.
- Polar Plunge, on the beach.

The event features live music, vendors, food trucks, and games. Parking is available in legal street spaces in surrounding blocks; parking fees may apply. Fundraising is an integral part of the event: prizes are available for individual fundraisers and for teams, including awards for largest teams and top team fundraisers.
Special Olympics New Hanover County provides year-round sports training, competition, social events, and Summer Camp for people eight years and older with intellectual disabilities. In New Hanover County, more than 1000 athletes participate, and the program relies on private and corporate support and volunteer efforts to provide services at no cost to athletes and their families.
