Philadelphia Marathon Weekend
The Philadelphia Marathon Weekend is a major athletic event that draws over 30,000 participants to the streets of Pennsylvania's largest city. The event, which has been held since 1994, features several USATF-certified courses that guide runners through historic districts, urban neighborhoods, and scenic parklands. Participants pass numerous landmarks associated with American history, as well as the picturesque waterfronts of the Schuylkill River.
Runners can choose from a variety of distances and multi-event challenges:
- Marathon: A 26.2-mile course that serves as a Boston qualifier, finishing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
- Half Marathon: A 13.1-mile route through the Museum District, Old City, Center City, and Fairmount Park.
- 8K Run: A 4.97-mile race following the banks of the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive.
- Kid's Run: A short-distance, non-competitive event for children held at Eakins Oval.
- The Challenges: Options to combine multiple races, such as the Patriot, Independence, Liberty Bell, or Freedom Challenges.
The courses are known for being fast and scenic, with substantial crowd support from local residents. The event also includes a Health and Fitness Expo. For those tracking participants, an official mobile app provides results and favorite-tracking features. The races typically take place in late autumn, with average temperatures around 54°F (12°C).
