Pioneer Spirit Triathlon : overview
The Pioneer Spirit Triathlon is a mid-spring tri-series held in Petersburg, IL from May 9 to May 16, 2026. The event uses a heated indoor pool for the swim portions and offers in-person and virtual options. The Tri-Challenge combines the Mini and Sprint distances back to back. The event was selected as one of Triathlete’s 2025 Best Beginner Triathlons in the U.S.

Course and participant information
The Mini bike uses flat rural roads. The Sprint bike includes rolling and flat prairie roads. The Sprint run follows the same 3.1-mile route through Petersburg, passing century-old architectural structures and a historic cemetery. Mini events are open to all ages; Sprint and Tri-Challenge entries require ages 12 and up. Virtual 5k participants do not race on site, must pick up packets locally or pay for domestic shipping, and have one week after race day to submit results. Virtual entries are not eligible for awards.
Race services and awards
Fees include timing chips (must be returned), a BIB number, race-specific swag, finishing medals for all athletes, placement awards, water, and post-race food. Post-race showers are available at the PORTA pool. An awards ceremony follows after the final Sprint finisher. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
