Pioneer Spirit Triathlon - Sprint, Mini, & Challenge | 5k Run
The Pioneer Spirit Triathlon is a multi-event series held May 9 to May 16, 2026 in Petersburg, Illinois at 17651 Bluejay Rd. The series includes pool-based triathlon distances, a 5k run walk and a virtual 5k option. The event was selected as one of Triathlete's 2025 Best Beginner Triathlons in the U.S.
Event distances and formats:
- 5k Run Walk
- 5k Virtual Run Walk
- Mini Triathlon: 100 yard swim, 5 mi bike, 1 mi run
- Sprint Triathlon: 300 yard swim, 13 mi bike, 3.1 mi run
- Tri Challenge: mini and sprint completed back to back
Additional event details are provided for each format. The mini triathlon is open to all ages; sprint and Tri Challenge are for ages 12 and up. Athena and Clydesdale options are available for the triathlon distances. Team registrations are not offered.
Virtual 5k participants complete the event offsite, must pick up packets locally or pay for shipping within the U.S., and have one week to submit results; virtual entries do not qualify for awards. Race fees include timing chip use, BIB number, race-specific swag, finishing medals for all athletes, placement awards, water, and post-race food. Post-race showers are available at the PORTA pool.
