Pine Mountain Trail Run
The Pine Mountain Trail Run is a multi-distance trail event held at FDR State Park in Pine Mountain, Georgia. The event marks its 46th year and is recognized by UltraRunning Magazine as an "Old School Ultra." For 2026 the program includes several options:
- 10K Trail Open
- 19 miles (single loop)
- 40 miles
- 46 miles OG Invitational
- Virtual 400 Mile Challenge
The course is well marked and official waterproof state park trail maps are available at park headquarters or from the Pine Mountain Trail Association. Organizers note a map is usually not needed on race day but may be useful for crews.
Trail surface and topography are variable: footing is rocky in places and often leaf-covered, producing uneven terrain. The trail runs as a series of rolling hills with no major climbs but many smaller hills and long gradual climbs. Elevation along the Pine Mountain Trail ranges roughly between 899 feet and 1,395 feet. There are a few minor stream crossings, generally ankle deep depending on water levels. The event notes that runners may repeatedly strike toes on sharp rocks and that falls are possible.
The trail is open to other users on race day; volunteers and Boy Scout groups are active in trail maintenance. Parking is organized at Liberty Bell Park (pool side and designated areas) and a State Park parking pass or the daily fee applies. The event is 100% non-profit and a portion of proceeds supports FDR State Park. Registration policies include no refunds, transfers, or deferrals; GUTS members receive a $5 discount. Packet pickup occurs the day before at Liberty Bell Park and packets must be collected in person.
December weather in the area is variable, with average highs in the mid 60s and lows in the 40s and possible rain; organizers require runners to carry a safety light and cold or wet weather gear. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
