Pen Y Fan Challenge

The Pen Y Fan Challenge is a mountain trail race located in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. The event focuses on the ascent of Pen Y Fan, which is the highest peak in the southern part of Wales. Participants must be at least 16 years of age on the day of the event to take part.

There are two distances available for runners:

  • 5 miles
  • 13 miles

Both routes are signposted and marshalled for navigation. The 5-mile route includes a finish line station with water and sweets. The 13-mile route provides a checkpoint with refreshments along the course. Participants are required to use reusable cups as part of the event's environmental considerations. All finishers receive a medal and a buff, and the event utilizes chip timing to record results.

Specific compulsory kit requirements are in place for safety. All runners must carry a mobile phone, a foil blanket or bivi bag, snacks, a basic first aid kit, and a whistle. Participants in the 5-mile race must carry at least 500ml of hydration and a windproof jacket. Participants in the 13-mile race are required to carry 2 liters of hydration, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat or buff, and gloves.

The event location is identified by the postcode LD3 8NL, with the start and finish taking place in the vicinity of the peak. A portion of the entry fee is contributed to the National Trust for the maintenance of the area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
