About the race
The Pen Y Fan Challenge is a mountain trail event organised by Off The Tarmac around Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons. It offers two measured trail distances from a common start at Storey Arms, LD3 8NL, on 25 July 2027. The routes include steep climbs, rocky trail sections and exposed conditions common to mountain terrain. Marshals mark the course and provide on-route support.
Distances:
- 13 miles - 4097 ft (1248 m) elevation gain
- 5 miles - 1765 ft elevation gain
Entry fees are published separately for affiliated and non-affiliated runners: affiliated entries are £22 for the 5 mile option and £32 for the 13 mile option; non-affiliated entries are £24 for the 5 mile option and £34 for the 13 mile option.
Organisers require compulsory safety kit. The 13 mile route requires a mobile phone, a minimum of 2 litres of hydration, a foil blanket or bivi bag, snacks, a basic first aid kit, a whistle, waterproof jacket and trousers, and hat or gloves. The 5 mile route requires a mobile phone, at least 500 ml hydration, a foil blanket or bivi bag, snacks, a basic first aid kit, a whistle and a windproof jacket.
