Peak Rail 7
Peak Rail 7 is an Easter Monday running event that challenges competitors to beat a steam hauled heritage train on the route from Peak Rail Rowsley South station to Matlock Riverside station and back. The course follows the White Peak Loop extension of the Monsal Trail and stays adjacent to the rail line for much of the route.
The route distance is 7 miles and is almost exclusively off road, comprising a cinder trail with a small amount of tarmac and a short uneven riverside stretch into Matlock. The course is marked and includes three flights of steps (two up, one down), which makes it unsuitable for wheelchair users. The trail is shared with walkers and cyclists; marshals and a lead cyclist will assist on the course and road crossings will be marshalled. Competitors are asked to remain courteous to other trail users and not to use earphones.
Entry is limited to 250 runners and the minimum age is 16 years on race day. Entry fees were listed as £18 for UKA affiliated runners and £20 for unaffiliated runners. The event operates in close conjunction with Peak Rail; discounted supporters train tickets are available for a special charter but only 230 train tickets were allocated, so race entry does not guarantee a seat on the train. Free parking is available at Rowsley South station and refreshments can be purchased at the Northwood Buffet.
All runners receive a race memento. Prizes are offered for male and female overall 1, 2 and 3, age categories V40, 50, 60 and 70, and team versus steam awards. The event also serves as a charity fundraiser and has raised over £21,000 since being added to the race calendar. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
