Pawpaw 10 Miler and 5 Miler
The Pawpaw 10 Miler and 5 Miler take place in the third week of September at Powhatan State Park as part of the Pawpaw festival. The event is held alongside festival offerings including beer trucks, family and nature programs, and live music.
Participants run the exterior trails of the park, which combine riverside sections, open reclaimed fields, and shaded singletrack. The trail along the James River is described as flat and scenic. Away from the river there are steep climbs into open fields with long views, stretches through forested singletrack, and a passage by historic cabin ruins before returning to the trailhead.
A water station is located near mile 5; 5 Mile runners should carry water because there is no on-course water for that distance. Drop bags and pacers are not permitted. Strollers and dogs are not permitted. Packet pick up begins at 7am at the Trailhead parking. Runners who register by September 1 are guaranteed a gender-specific short sleeve shirt. Food will be available for purchase from the Cafe at Maidens after the event.
A portion of proceeds benefits the Friends of Powhatan State Park. Lodging options at the park include a campground with 30-plus sites and yurts; the nearest commercial lodging is in Midlothian, about a 30 minute drive.
