What is the Pain Is Currency Backyard Ultra?
This is a Last Man Standing–style backyard ultra race. The format requires runners to complete a fixed loop of 4.167 miles every hour on the hour. The event continues until only one runner remains who completes a loop. There is no set finish distance.
The Twist: Adding Weight
The key rule is the addition of weight each hour. The first loop has no added weight. Starting on the second loop, runners must carry one additional pound, and this weight increases cumulatively with each subsequent loop. Runners must finish their loop within the hour to continue. Weight is provided and can be carried in a pack, vest, or by hand.
Course and Location
The event takes place at 1723 Maidens Rd, Maidens, VA. The course is a 4.167-mile loop on mountain bike single-track trail. It features roots, rocks, and rolling hills, with an elevation gain of about 100 feet per loop.
Event Details and Logistics
The date is Saturday, April 4, 2026, with a field limit of 50 runners. Each runner is provided a 10x10 area in the start/finish yard for a personal camp, which can be set up the night before. Water is provided at the start/finish, but runners should plan to provide their own food. Restrooms are available nearby.
Rules and Policies
The race follows Official Backyard Ultra Association rules. Runners must be in the starting corral at the bell for each new loop. Headphones are allowed. Once a runner fails to start or finish a loop on time, they receive a DNF and cannot re-enter. Refunds are 50% available until March 1, 2026, and transfers are allowed until March 21, 2026.
