Event Overview
The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Casco Bay takes place in Maine and is recognized as the location of the first official swimrun in the United States. The course involves a series of ocean swims, island hopping, and trail running across several islands off the coast of Portland. Participants navigate salty water, changing tides, and coastal rock scrambles.
Athletes can compete in three different distances, available for both teams and solo participants:
- Casco Bay Experience: Total distance 9,705 m (swim 1,635 m, run 8,070 m, elevation 45 m).
- Casco Bay Sprint: Total distance 16,930 m (swim 3,230 m, run 13,700 m, elevation 107 m).
- Casco Bay World Series: Total distance 35,165 m (swim 7,940 m, run 27,225 m, elevation 262 m).
Logistics and Safety
Access to the islands is managed via the Casco Bay Lines Ferries from Portland. On race day, ferry transport to the starting lines is included for all athletes and volunteers. The event features specific safety cut-off times at Long Island, Little Diamond, and Peak Island to ensure participants finish before dark.
Mandatory equipment includes a wetsuit, a swim cap, a number bib, a whistle, and a compression bandage. Solo racers must also carry an auto-inflating personal flotation device. The course includes water stops providing water, electrolytes, and gels.
Awards and Recognition
The event offers awards for the top three finishers in the World Series and Sprint categories for male, female, and mixed teams, as well as male and female solo racers. No awards are presented for the Experience distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
