Open to Offas
Open to Offas is a long-established challenge event in northeast Wales held in August, based at Cilcain Village Hall in Flintshire. The event offers multiple long-distance walking and running routes over the Clwydian Hills and sections of the Offa's Dyke Path.
Three route options are provided:
- 32 miles (52 km) 6377 ft ascent (1944 m)
- 24 miles (40 km) 4945 ft ascent (1507 m)
- 16 miles (25.5 km) 2792 ft ascent (851 m)
All routes climb the Clwydian Hills to follow the Offa's Dyke Path over Moel Famau, returning via wooded countryside and Loggerheads Country Park. The longer routes continue over Moel Fenlli towards Llanarmon-yn-Ial. The event description notes favourable underfoot conditions and generally good visibility from the ridge sections.
Entry includes a detailed route description, refreshments at checkpoints and finish, and a certificate. There is a cut-off at Checkpoint 3 for the 32 miles route; arriving after it requires continuing on an alternative route. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead; dogs are not allowed inside Cilcain Village Hall. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are expected to carry a map (Explorer 265 or Landranger 116) or an electronic equivalent. Route description and GPX files are available from Merseystride LDWA.
