The Nitty Gritty
The Nitty Gritty is a trail running event held at Red Lodge Mountain, 305 Ski Run Rd, Red Lodge, MT. The event uses a multi-lap course around the mountain that mixes access road, singletrack and sections of bushwhacking. The course is changed each year and course maps are released two weeks before race day.
Each lap is approximately 4.3 miles and typically features about 900 to 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Three laps make the half marathon and six laps make the full marathon. A relay option is offered for the marathon with teams of two to six people.
Distances and options include:
- 26.2 miles Marathon, six laps
- 13.1 miles Half marathon, three laps
- 4.31 miles Hot Lap
- Team relay Marathon relay teams of two to six
Entry fees listed by the organizer include youth pricing and tiered adult rates: $25 for participants 17 and under, $25 for the Hot Lap, $40 for the Half Marathon, $40 for the Marathon, and $70 to $200 for teams of two to six. Adult entry prices increase on May 28th.
All ages are welcome and the event notes that participants should expect sections of power hiking. Four-legged training partners are allowed on or off leash; off leash dogs must have reliable recall and be kept away from the snack table.
