Nitty Gritty Off Road Race
The Nitty Gritty Off Road Race is an annual event held at Red Lodge Mountain Resort. The course consists of dirt roads and single track trails with significant elevation changes throughout. Participants can choose from several distance options and categories:
- Solo Marathon (26.2 Miles)
- Marathon Relay (26.2 Miles) for teams of 2 to 6 people
- Solo Half Marathon (13.1 Miles)
- Hot Lap (4.31 Miles)
The event is organized around a lap system. The Solo Marathon and Marathon Relay consist of 6 laps, while the Solo Half Marathon involves 3 laps. The Hot Lap is a single circuit. The main base area serves as the start and finish point for every lap. At this central location, participants have access to water, snacks, and a space to stage personal resources for quick access during the race.
Specific safety requirements are in place for certain categories. Solo Marathon participants are required to run the first lap together as a group and must carry a headlamp, cell phone, and bear spray. While the base area provides supplies, there are no aid stations located on the course itself for the Hot Lap. Dogs are permitted to accompany runners either on or off leash.
