Event Details

The Night Challenge 4: Glendalough is a night running event scheduled for a Friday in October. There is an entry limit of 250 participants. It is part of the Night Challenges league.

Course Options

The event offers two distances:

  • A long course of 10 km with 490 m of ascent.
  • A short course of 5 km.

The route is described as a loop around Glendalough, taking in parts of the Wicklow Way and St Kevin's Way trails. The long course starts by the Upper Lake and goes to the summit of Derrybawn mountain. The short course is a loop of the lower lake and rejoins the long course for the final stretch, passing Glendalough's round tower and St Kevin's church. The route is fully marked.

Mandatory Kit

A Level B mandatory kit is required for all runners. This includes:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hat or buff
  • Gloves
  • Whistle
  • Charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored
  • Foil blanket, bivvy bag, or equivalent

All runners must also have a torch suitable for running at night, preferably a head torch. A backup torch or spare battery is recommended. The actual kit to be carried will be finalized on the day based on conditions. Random kit checks may be carried out.

Location and Logistics

The event is located at the Glendalough Upper Lake Carpark in County Wicklow. There is a parking fee. Carpooling is encouraged. The prizegiving will also be held at the Upper Lake carpark. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
