Event details

Night Challenge 4: Glendalough is a mountain running event in County Wicklow on Friday 23rd October 2026. It is part of the Night Challenges league. The long course is 10 km with about 490 m of ascent. The event difficulty is rated 6 (2,2,2) - moderate terrain, 200 m to 500 m ascent, 6 km to 10 km. The route is fully marked and GPS use is not allowed. The assembly and prizegiving location is Glendalough Upper Lake car park, where there is a €5 entry fee for parking. Organisers encourage carpooling. Entry details are not yet published; entries for league events usually open a couple of weeks before the event.

Route and course

The long course is a looped 10 km route around Glendalough. It starts on the shore of the Upper Lake, reaches the summit of Derrybawn mountain, and includes sections of the Wicklow Way and St Kevin's Way trails. The short course is a lower-lake loop of about 4.8 km that rejoins the long course for the final 2 km and passes the round tower and St Kevin's church.

Mandatory kit and safety

The event requires Level B - Standard mandatory kit: a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, a charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored, and a foil blanket, bivvy bag or equivalent. Runners must also have a suitable torch for night running, preferably a head torch; a back-up torch or spare battery is recommended. The exact kit to be carried may be finalised on the day.
