Newton Hills Trail Races
The Sioux Falls Area Running Club has staged a trail race at Newton Hills State Park since 2002. The event began as an 8 mile race through 2006 and changed to the current distances in 2007. The 2026 edition is scheduled for October 10, 2026 and takes place at the Blue Diamond Trail Head.
The event offers two distance choices:
- 6 mile : a route that covers most of the park trails with notable elevation change.
- 2 mile : a shorter option intended to introduce runners to trail terrain and support family participation.
Awards are given in each race for 1st overall male and female and for the last overall male and female. The race is part of the club points series for 2026, which includes Deer Dash, Camden, Big Sioux Rec, Newton Hills and partner races Good Earth and Mount Lucia. Points per race are awarded by age division, with 1st place receiving 10 points, 2nd place 9 points, down to 10th place receiving 1 point. Age divisions for the series are 29 and under, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, and 60 plus.
