Newton Hills Trail Race
The Sioux Falls Area Running Club organizes trail races at Newton Hills State Park. The event in 2026 marks the Trail Run Series 10 year celebration and the park's 25th anniversary. The series has run at Newton Hills since 2002; distances were changed to the current format in 2007.
Distances:
- 2 miles
- 6 miles
Both races start and finish near the picnic shelter by the suspension bridge at the Blue Diamond Trail Head. The 2 mile course follows the Woodland Trail single track loop with one large hill and returns to the start area. The 6 mile route begins in the opposite direction, descends a service road through the horse camp, uses multi-purpose trails with three prominent climbs and flat sections, then joins the 2 mile Woodland loop before returning to the finish. Race lengths are approximately 2 miles and 6 miles.
Logistics and rules include a required state park day pass, chip timing provided by 605 Running Company, no pets allowed in the Trail Race Series, and no refunds or credits. Swag is being offered again for races in the series. A points series awards 10 points for first place in each division down to 1 point for tenth. Age divisions include 29 and under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 plus. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
