Canyon of the Eagles New Year's Trail Challenge
The event takes place at Canyon of the Eagles on the shores of Lake Buchanan in Burnet, Texas. It offers multiple trail and running options that use riverside trails and sun‑bleached limestone bluffs with frequent river and bluff views.
Distances offered include:
- 62.2 miles (THE EAGLE 100K ULTRA)
- 31.1 miles (50K Ultramarathon)
- 13.1 miles (Half Marathon)
- 5K
The 100K and 50K use a looped course on trails and along the river and have a 24 hour cutoff. The half marathon and a ruck division use a scenic looped 13.1 mile route. The ruck division requires a minimum carried weight of 20 pounds for participants under 150 pounds and 30 pounds for participants over 150 pounds, with weights checked at the start and finish; its cutoff time is 12 hours.
A separate Last One Standing gauntlet runs as a progressive backyard ultra. Loop distances increase from 4 to 7 miles while target paces tighten from 15:00 per mile to 8:34 per mile; after the escalation the loop locks at 7 miles and the event continues until one competitor remains recorded as the Sole Survivor.
Organizers note wildlife viewing opportunities including bald eagles, varied natural scenery, and trail terrain suitable for both running and rucking. Proceeds from some events support a local youth running program. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
