Event Overview
The New Years Trail Challenge takes place at the Canyon of the Eagles in Burnet, Texas. The event features a variety of trail-based distances that utilize the natural terrain of the Texas Hill Country, including sun-bleached limestone bluffs and paths along the Colorado River. Participants can observe local wildlife, such as bald eagles, and view the river scenery throughout the courses.
Distance Options
Participants can choose from several different distances and categories:
- 100K Ultra (62.2 miles): A looped course design on trails and along the river.
- 50K Ultra (31.1 miles): A looped course on scenic limestone bluff trails with an elevation change of approximately 512 feet gain and 531 feet loss per loop.
- 25K Trail Run: A 15.5-mile journey through varied natural scenery with a 12-hour cutoff time.
- 13.1M Half-Marathon: A looped course featuring river views and gentle inclines.
- 10K and 5K: Trail runs or walks through wooded paths and natural terrain.
Ruck Divisions
Special Ruck Divisions are available for the 25K, Half-Marathon, 10K, and 5K distances. These involve carrying a weighted rucksack throughout the race. For the 25K and Half-Marathon, participants under 150 pounds must carry a minimum of 20 pounds, while those over 150 pounds must carry 30 pounds. For the 5K and 10K, the requirements are 20 pounds for men and 10 pounds for women. Weights are verified at the start and finish of the events. Rucksacks must include reflective elements for safety.
Additional Information
The event has a 24-hour cutoff time for the ultramarathon distances. For the 25K distance, the use of running or hiking poles is recommended. Proceeds from the 5K and 10K races support youth running programs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
