Event Overview
The New River Trail Challenge Triathlon takes place in New River Trail State Park in Southwest Virginia. It is Virginia's longest-running adventure triathlon, first held in 2000. The race is noted for its friendly atmosphere.
Race Format
The triathlon covers a total of 65.2 miles across three stages:
- A 40-mile out-and-back bike ride.
- A 12.1-mile downriver kayak paddle on the New River.
- A half marathon (13.1-mile) run along the river.
The course uses a flat, crushed cinder trail on land, while the river section features smooth flow with small rapids under normal conditions. Participants may compete as individuals or in teams of two or three.
Schedule and Registration
The event date is September 19, 2026. Registration opens on December 1, 2025. There are discounted fee deadlines on May 31 and July 31, 2025. Individual registration fees range from $90 to $115, and team fees from $240 to $295, depending on the registration date.
Additional Information
Registration includes a finisher's medal, a microfiber shirt, two beverages, snacks and drinks along the course, and kayak transport back to the start. Food will be available for purchase after the race, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of New River Trail. Awards include Virginia State Parks gift certificates for the overall male and female winners and the fastest team. Hot showers are available for campers.
