New River Trail Challenge Triathlon
The New River Trail Challenge Triathlon is an adventure triathlon held at New River Trail State Park in Southwest Virginia on Sept. 19, 2026. Presented by Dominion Energy and part of the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series, the event began in 2000 and has grown from a local race to a multi-state draw.
The race covers a total of 65.2 miles across three stages along and in the New River. The trail surface is crushed cinder and described as flat; the river normally flows smoothly with small rapids. Distances for stages are:
- 40 miles out-and-back bike
- 12.1 miles downriver kayak paddle
- 13.1 miles (half marathon) run along the river
Participants may enter as solo competitors or in teams of two or three. Registration opens December 1 with tiered fees and deadlines; discounted and second-fee deadlines apply, and t-shirts are only guaranteed for registrations before August 15. The event policy states no cancellations.
Registration includes a finisher’s medal, a microfiber shirt, awards, two beers, snacks and drinks along the course, and kayak transport back to Foster Falls. Overall male and female winners receive a $250 Virginia State Parks gift certificate; the fastest team receives a $300 certificate. Food will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the Friends of New River Trail. Hot showers are available for campers on Friday and on race day.
