New River Trail Challenge Triathlon

The New River Trail Challenge is an adventure triathlon held in the New River Trail State Park in Southwest Virginia. Established in 2000, this multi-stage event takes place along and in the New River, utilizing a course consisting of a flat trail with a crushed cinder surface and a river that features smooth water with small rapids under normal conditions.

The event covers a total distance of 65.2 miles and is divided into three distinct stages:

  • 40-mile bike leg (out and back)
  • 12.1-mile kayak paddle (downriver)
  • 13.1-mile half marathon run (along the river)

Participants can choose to compete as solo athletes or as part of a team consisting of two or three members. The competition features various age groups and categories.

The registration fee includes a finisher's medal, a microfiber shirt, snacks and drinks at aid stations along the course, and kayak transport back to Foster Falls. Participants also receive two beverages provided at the post-race area. Hot showers are available on-site for those camping at the park. Top finishers in the individual and team categories are eligible for state park gift certificates.

The Foster Falls Access point serves as a primary location for the event, accessible via Route 608 in Southwest Virginia. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
