New River Trail Challenge

The New River Trail Challenge takes place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in Max Meadows, Virginia (116 Orphanage Dr). The event is listed as a multi-stage challenge that uses the New River and the adjacent trail. The trail surface is described as flat crushed cinder, and the river normally flows smoothly with small rapids.

Course and format

The event consists of three consecutive stages for a total of 65.2 miles:

  • 40-mile out-and-back bike leg

Competitors may enter as solo athletes or in teams of two or three.

Registration and rules

The event is limited to 300 entrants. Two event categories are shown: an individual triathlon (price $90; 175 spots available; registration opens December 1, 2025) and a relay option (price $240; 110 spots available; registration opens December 31, 2025). Solo competitors and teams with at least two students or faculty members from the same university qualify for a collegiate discount.
