New River Trail Races
The New River Trail Races take place along the New River Trail State Park in Fries, VA. All courses are 100% dirt, flat, and follow the New River and Chestnut Creek. Each distance uses an out-and-back layout on the trail.
- 100 K
- 50 K
- 25 K
- 10 K
- 5 K (free community untimed 5k)
Aid stations serve the 50k and 100k at multiple mile points and the 25k and 10k at designated locations. Stations are stocked with electrolyte drink, water, Coke, PB&J, salty snacks, candy, and fruit, with hot foods at selected stations. This is a cupless race; runners must carry at least one water bottle or cup because no disposable cups are available.
Drop bags are accepted on race morning for longer distances and are transported to the Cliffview turnaround then returned to the finish area the same day. Packet pick-up is held at the Start/Finish area on the evening before the event. Headlamps or flashlights are required for the 100k and recommended for 50k runners because portions of the course and parking area have limited lighting.
Participants should expect limited to no cell service on parts of the trail; hand radio operators will assist with communications. The trail remains open to other users during the event, so runners must be courteous to cyclists, e-bikes, and horseback riders. A state park parking fee of seven dollars per day applies unless a park pass is held.
Finish recognition: finishers of the 10k, 25k, and 50k receive a finisher's medal; 100k finishers receive a buckle. The free community 5k is untimed and does not include swag, awards, or a finisher's medal. No refunds are offered; transfers and rollovers are allowed under stated conditions.
