New River Trail Races

The New River Trail Races take place April 10, 2027 in Fries, Virginia within New River Trail State Park. The event offers multiple distances on a single-day schedule and uses the trail corridor along the New River and Chestnut Creek.

Distances include:

  • 100 K
  • 50 K
  • 25 K
  • 10 K
  • 5 K free community run

The course is 100 percent dirt, flat, and run entirely along the river and creek. Each distance is an out and back course. Aid stations are placed along the 50k and 100k courses at multiple mile points and are stocked with electrolyte drink, water, Coke, peanut butter and jelly, salty snacks, candy, and fruit; hot foods are available at selected stations. The 25k uses the same aid stations at designated points and the 10k has aid at two mile markers. This is a cupless race; runners are required to carry at least one water bottle or cup because no disposable cups are available.

50k and 100k runners may leave drop bags at the start area on race morning for delivery to the turnaround; returned items left after the event may be recycled, donated, or disposed of. Packet pick up occurs at the start and finish area the night before and on race morning. Headlamps or flashlights are required for the 100k and recommended for 50k runners. Parking is across a grassy field with limited lighting and a state park parking fee applies unless a valid pass is held.

All finishers of the 10k, 25k, and 50k receive a finisher medal; 100k finishers receive a buckle. Awards are given for overall top three in Male, Female, and Nonbinary categories and for multiple age group categories. The free community 5k is untimed and does not include awards, swag, or a finisher medal.

Trail safety notes: runners should be cautious at road crossings, expect limited cell service in sections of the trail, and be courteous to other trail users such as cyclists, e bikes, and horseback riders. Hand radio operators will be available on course for communications. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
