Event Overview
The NAV4 Lakes Mountain 40 enters its 13th edition as a long-distance mountain running event in the Lake District. The course starts and finishes at the Askham Community Centre, located five miles from Penrith and the M6 motorway. The route is designed as a figure-of-eight and traverses various Lakeland ridge lines, trails, and valleys.
Course Details
Participants follow a route that includes several significant summits and landmarks. The course reaches the peaks of Loadpot, High Street, Helvellyn, and Place Fell. Additional checkpoints are located at Angle Tarn, Patterdale, Grisedale Tarn, and Martindale. The terrain involves several thousand feet of ascent through mountain environments.
Available distances include:
- 40 miles (approximately 64 km) with roughly 2,500 meters of total ascent.
- 27 miles (approximately 43 km) which serves as the shorter route option.
Participation and Equipment
Registration is open to competent mountain runners, with the field limited to 110 participants. Due to the mountain environment and the potential for varied Spring weather conditions, all runners must carry a full set of mountain safety gear. Required equipment includes waterproofs, a thermal long-sleeved layer, a spare fleece or insulated jacket, a warm hat, gloves, a head torch, a compass, a map, a whistle, a survival bag, and personal food and water.
