NAV4 Lakes Mountain 40
NAV4 Lakes Mountain 40 is a spring mountain running event based at Askham Community Centre on the edge of the Lake District National Park. The route is a figure of eight that combines Lakeland ridge lines, trails and valleys and includes the summits of Loadpot, High Street, Helvellyn and Place Fell.
The route covers approximately 40 miles with around c.2500 m of ascent. There is a shorter option of 27 miles. Key checkpoints include Loadpot, High Street, Angle Tarn, Patterdale, Grisedale Tarn, Helvellyn, Place Fell and Martindale. The outward and return legs form a loop with runnable trails and steeper sections such as Dollywagon Pike and the Helvellyn ridges; winter conditions may prevent use of the sharp ridges.
Full bad weather mountain running kit is required. Typical required items listed include waterproofs, long sleeve thermal, spare fleece or primaloft, warm hat and gloves, head torch, compass, map, food and drink, survival bag and whistle.
At the finish participants are offered hot and cold drinks, soup and traybakes. Campervans are permitted for Friday overnight stays for a fee of £10. Askham is about five miles from Penrith and has local accommodation options and rail connections via Penrith.
