Event
The NAV4 Lakes Mountain 40 takes place on Saturday 18 April 2026 in Askham, on the edge of the Lake District National Park, about five miles from Penrith. Entry is limited to competent mountain runners and is capped at 100 starters (the system accepts 110 to allow for a 10% DNS). Entry fee is £55. Entries open 23 October 2025 and close 13 April 2026.
Course
The main route is 40 miles with approximately c.2500+m of ascent, run mostly on Lakeland mountain paths and ridge lines. The route includes the summits of High Street and Helvellyn and follows a figure-of-eight pattern. Checkpoints are Loadpot, High Street, Angle Tarn, Patterdale, Grisedale Tarn, Helvellyn, Patterdale (again), Place Fell and Martindale. A shorter option is available at 27 miles.
Logistics and kit
Start and finish are at Askham Community Centre. Friday night floor space in Askham Village Hall is available for £10 per person; campervans are welcome with a £10 overnight fee. Full bad weather mountain running kit is required; organisers list waterproofs, a quality long-sleeved thermal, a spare fleece or primaloft, warm hat and gloves, head torch, compass, map, food and drink, survival bag and whistle.
