Event overview

NAV4 Lakes Mountain 40 takes place on Saturday 18 April 2026 in Askham, on the edge of the Lake District National Park near Penrith. The event is a mountain trail running event over rough Lakeland terrain. It is restricted to competent mountain runners and limited to 100 starters (the entry system will accept 110 to allow a 10% non-starter allowance). The entry fee is £55. Entries open 23 October 2025 and close 13 April 2026.

Route, distance and kit

The main route is about 40 miles with roughly 2500+ m of ascent and includes summits such as High Street and Helvellyn. Checkpoints on the figure-of-eight route include Loadpot, High Street, Angle Tarn, Patterdale, Grisedale Tarn, Helvellyn, Patterdale (again), Place Fell and Martindale. A shorter route of 27 miles is also available.

Participants are expected to carry full bad-weather mountain running kit. Required items include waterproofs, quality thermal layers, spare warm clothing, hat and gloves, head torch, compass, map, food and drink, survival bag and whistle. Final kit requirements are confirmed in a pre-event information email based on conditions.

Logistics and accommodation

Start and finish are at Askham Community Centre. Floor space in Askham Village Hall is available on Friday night for £10 per person. Campervans are welcome on Friday with an overnight fee of £10.
