30th Annual Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle
The Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle is an annual multi-sport event held in Somerville, Medford, and Woburn. The event celebrates the seasonal return of the river herring to the Mystic River watershed. Participants can choose between running, walking, and paddling activities, with some participants choosing to combine events.
The event features a variety of distances and disciplines:
- 5 km run or walk
- 3 mile paddling race
- 9 mile paddling race
- 12 mile paddling race
- 11 mile bike ride
- 30 minute mobility class
All activities are based at the DCR Blessing of the Bay Boathouse in Somerville. While there is no parking available in the boathouse lot, street parking and a dedicated parking lot are located approximately 0.5 miles from the site. Participants who do not own a boat may arrange for a rental to be delivered to the race location.
Participants who complete both a running race and a paddling race are eligible for the Iron Herring Award. In addition to the competitive races, there is a free, 11 mile guided bike ride and a 30 minute hip and spine mobility class open to all ability levels. The event coincides with trail updates and educational components regarding the local regional greenways. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
