Mukamuka Munter
Mukamuka Munter is a Wellington trail race established in 2007 and categorised as a "wilderness run" inspired by the Wellington Trampers' Marathon. The fixture for 15 August 2026 follows a roughly 32 km / 965 m route that moves from coastal terrain into inland river valleys and native forest within the Remutaka Forest Park. The event is presented by the Wilderness Running and Endurance Collective Inc.
The course begins at the Orongorongo River mouth and follows the Wild Coast Trail around Turikirae Head, continuing east toward Mukamuka-iti and Mukamuka Stream where hard packed 4x4 trail gives way to sandy sections. The route then enters a broad river valley that becomes more rugged approaching the South Saddle; technical river running and navigation are important in this section. In the bush section runners enter largely untouched native forest, reach the South Saddle with wide coastal and regional views, then descend steep rooted track to Matthews Stream and the major Orongorongo river crossing. The final approach runs along the big bend track through Catchpool and onto the Orongorongo River track toward the finish. The course includes a mix of runnable trail and technically demanding sections and passes through isolated coastal and mountain landscape.
