Ian Priest Memorial Hutt River Trail Events
The Ian Priest Memorial Hutt River Trail Events present a set of off-road races along the Hutt River corridor from the Remutaka ranges toward Wellington Harbour. The event offers multiple distances:
- 60 km Ultra Marathon Cross Creek to Petone via the Remutaka Rail Trail.
- 42.2 km Marathon Kaitoke to Petone along riverside trails and historic tracks.
- 21.1 km Half Marathon Moonshine Park to Petone.
- 10 km Fun Run/Walk Around McEwan Park and Hutt River Estuary.
All events finish at McEwan Park, Petone, where a post-event celebration and music take place. Courses include historic Remutaka Rail Trail tunnels and zigzags, bush tracks, riverbanks, estuary paths, and some sealed footpaths. Surfaces vary: grass, gravel, bush tracks and some unsealed vehicle tracks, with shared use by walkers, cyclists and occasionally motor vehicles. The Marathon course includes about 5 km of public road early on and generally drops around 200–300 metres overall. The Ultra follows the historic Remutaka Incline Rail Trail for the first 18 km, including roughly 7 km of uphill.
Support features include aid stations (from 23 km on the Ultra and regularly on other courses), well-marked trails, marshals and support crews. Shuttles run from the finish to the various start locations. Course layouts may change due to ongoing River Trail work. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
