MTC Pooka : Mount to Coast Day 1
The MTC Pooka is a 38-mile ultra run along Ireland’s west coast, held as Day 1 of the 14-day Mount to Coast MizMal® end-to-end challenge. The route starts on Mizen Road, Cloghane, Goleen, passes checkpoints at roughly 8.7 miles, 17.5 miles (Dunbeacon) and 27.1 miles (Bantry Pier), and finishes at the Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff. Total ascent is about 830 metres and total descent about 893 metres.
The event is offered as a standalone ultra or as the opening day of MizMal®, which comprises 14 individual daily races from Mizen Head to Malin Head. Every Pooka finisher receives a bespoke MTC Pooka medal; male and female champions receive race trophies. Entry options include a standard race fee that covers entry, checkpoint support, race tracking, GPX/route information, checkpoint food and finisher recognition, and an upgraded “Pooka Plus” package that adds a race shirt and lightweight hi-vis jacket.
The course is not fully signed; competitors must be capable of navigation and will receive route maps and GPX files in advance. Mandatory kit is required and includes items such as a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and basic first-aid. Checkpoint cut-offs are set to enforce a minimum average pace of 4.0 miles per hour and competitors who fall below this may be withdrawn.
