Event Overview

The MTC MizMal is a fourteen-day foot race across Ireland. It is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge series. The route covers a total distance of 618 miles (or 612 miles, according to another source) from Mizen Head to Malin Head, mostly following a route established by Wild Atlantic Cycling.

The Route & Format

The event consists of fourteen consecutive daily ultra-marathons, each named after a figure from Irish mythology. The daily distances vary, creating a multi-stage challenge. Accommodation from the end of day 1 through day 12 is provided by the organizer on a shared-room basis. Competitors are responsible for their own accommodation at the start in Mizen Head and after the finish at Malin Head.

Requirements & Logistics

The event has a strict 4 mph minimum average pace requirement; falling below this pace can result in withdrawal. There is a field limit of 20 competitors. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch, maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit. The organizer provides tracking devices and some personalized hi-viz clothing. All finishers receive a bespoke trophy, a bottle of champagne, the main MizMal medal, and an additional bespoke medal for each of the fourteen individual days completed. Checkpoints provide food, and the event is cup-free, requiring participants to bring their own reusable cup. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
