MTC Balor
The MTC Balor is a point-to-point ultra marathon covering a total distance of 47 miles. The course features approximately 1,862 feet of ascent and 1,819 feet of descent. This event serves as a standalone single-day race and also functions as the eleventh day of the fourteen-day MizMal challenge, which traverses Ireland from Mizen Head to Malin Head.
The route begins at Murphys Hotel in Tobercurry and concludes at the Rolling Wave Guesthouse in Bundoran. It follows the established MizMal path, passing through several designated checkpoints:
- 47 miles (Total distance)
- 8.8 miles (Carrowneden)
- 17.8 miles (Lugnamackan, Co. Sligo)
- 26.9 miles (Shannon Eighter, Co. Sligo)
- 36.1 miles (Gortnaleck)
This is a cup-free event, requiring participants to carry their own reusable drinking vessels. Mandatory equipment includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, first aid kit, and an emergency food pack. The event utilizes GPS tracking devices for all competitors, which include an inbuilt SOS button for emergencies.
Specific time restrictions are in place based on a minimum average speed of 4 mph. Checkpoints have strictly enforced closing times, and participants falling below the required pace will be withdrawn from the course. Registration is limited to a maximum of 40 participants, which includes those specifically entered for the MTC Balor and those completing the full multi-day challenge.
