About the race
The MTC Balor is a single-day ultra running event covering a total distance of 47 miles. It forms Day 11 of the fourteen-day MTC MizMal® end-to-end of Ireland and follows the MizMal® route for much of the course. The run starts at Murphys Hotel, Tobercurry and finishes at Rolling Wave Guesthouse, Bundoran.
The course includes four intermediate checkpoints at the following approximate stage distances: Carrowneden (8.8 miles), Lugnamackan, Co. Sligo (17.8 miles), Shannon Eighter, Co. Sligo (26.9 miles) and Gortnaleck (36.1 miles). Organisers set preset cut-off points based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour; competitors who fall below this requirement may be withdrawn. Competitor numbers are limited to 20 plus an allowance of 20 MizMal® entrants, for a maximum of 40 starters.
Mandatory kit requirements include a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. Maps and GPX files are issued to entrants by email approximately four weeks before the event. All finishers receive a Balor medal and male and female champions receive bespoke trophies. The event is cup free, so competitors must bring a reusable cup. Published ascent and descent figures are 1,862 ft and 1,819 ft respectively.
