Mountain Lakes Triathlon : Guntersville, AL
The Mountain Lakes Triathlon is a sprint and Olympic distance triathlon staged at the Guntersville Parks and Recreation Center with transition in the Senior Center parking area. The swim takes place in Lake Guntersville using a time-trial start; race numbers are assigned by estimated swim time and athletes enter the water approximately every three seconds. Registrants who register after the Wednesday before the race are assigned higher start numbers and begin toward the rear.
Distances:
- Sprint swim: 600 yd; Olympic swim: 1,200 yd
- Sprint bike: 16.2 mi; Olympic bike: 32.4 mi
- Sprint run: 3 mi; Olympic run: 6 mi
Wetsuit use follows USAT temperature rules: permitted up to 78.0°F, mandatory at or below 60.6°F, allowed 78.1–84.0°F with award ineligibility if worn, and prohibited at or above 84.1°F. The bike course uses residential and rural roads with flat sections and a few small rollers; Olympic racers complete two loops. A BIKE MOUNT / DISMOUNT LINE is used and athletes walk bikes from their rack to the mount line. Transition rows are organized by assigned race number and marked for easy location.
The run follows a paved lakeside trail and is described as flat; sprint racers complete one out-and-back loop, Olympic racers complete two. Race formats include full triathlon, swim-bike, bike-run, and 2- or 3-person relays. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and offers age-group and overall award categories, including divisions for paratriathletes, clydesdale, and athena.
