Mountain Lakes Triathlon : Guntersville, AL (July 24, 2027)
The Mountain Lakes Triathlon is a sanctioned multisport event held at Lake Guntersville and staged from the Guntersville Parks and Recreation Center with transition in the Senior Center parking area. The 2027 edition marks the event's 40th year.
Distances offered:
- Sprint: Swim 600 yd, Bike 16.2 mi, Run 3 mi
- Olympic: Swim 1,200 yd, Bike 32.4 mi, Run 6 mi
The swim is conducted in Lake Guntersville in a time-trial format with racers entering the water at short intervals; swim start order is assigned by estimated swim time. Wetsuit use follows USA Triathlon rules, with specific temperature ranges determining permitted, mandatory, and prohibited use; wetsuit use above a specified warm-water threshold can affect eligibility for awards.
The bike course uses a mix of residential and rural roads with mostly flat sections and a few small rollers; Olympic racers complete two loops. A marked bike mount and dismount line requires athletes to walk bikes across that line when starting and finishing the bike segment. The run is on a paved trail that runs along the lake; the sprint is one out-and-back loop and the Olympic two loops, with instructions to keep left to reduce congestion.
Race formats include individual triathlon, swim-bike, bike-run, aquabike, and 2- or 3-person relays. Timing uses disposable ankle-chip bands plus helmet, bike frame, and bib numbers. A Youth Splash & Dash for ages 7-15 is held the day before the main race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
