Moturoa Backyard Ultra : Rough Island, Nelson
The first Moturoa Backyard Ultra will take place on 12 September 2026 at Rough Island in Nelson. The event uses a repeated loop of 6.706 km (4.167 miles). Laps start on the hour every hour and each runner must complete their lap within the hour to be eligible to start the next lap.
The format continues until only one runner completes a solo lap, in which case that runner is recorded as the sole finisher. If no one completes a final lap on their own, there is no winner. Runners must be in the starting corral ready to start each lap; warnings are given at three, two, and one minute before each start. Failure to complete a lap within the hour or to start the next lap results in a DNF and the runner cannot resume.
This is a self-supported event with no aid stations on the course. Runners cannot receive support on the course, use poles or other artificial aids, or wear headphones or earbuds. Except for toilet stops, runners must not leave the course until a lap is completed. A toilet is located about 4 km into the loop and additional toilets are at the event village.
Parking is available only in designated areas near the event village; additional car parks require a walk. At registration entrants are allocated a designated tent area for their support crew. A quiet period is in effect overnight between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am. The island gate opens at sunrise and closes at dusk; runners who DNF overnight must remain on the island until it reopens.
Entries open 1 June; the entry fee is $50. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
