Moosehorn Ghost Run Half-Marathon and Relay
The Moosehorn Ghost Run is a running event held at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Baileyville, Maine. The course consists entirely of the refuge service road system, featuring car-free dirt and grassy access roads. The route travels through various landscapes including meadows, flowages, and heaths, providing opportunities to view local wildlife such as moose, deer, bear, and various bird species.
The event is hosted by the Bold Coast Runners in partnership with the Friends of Moosehorn. Participation is limited to a total of 100 runners across all categories. Participants receive event swag and are invited to a traditional pot-luck food gathering following the race. Awards are presented to the top three overall finishers, ten-year age groups, and relay teams. As the event carries a Halloween theme, awards are also given for the best costumes.
The following distances and categories are available:
- 13.1 miles (Individual Half-Marathon)
- 13.1 miles Relay (Teams of 2 or 3 people)
The half-marathon course is a 13.1-mile loop with a time limit of 3 hours and 30 minutes. It begins near the Refuge Headquarters, crosses Charlotte Road twice, and features rolling terrain with a gradual climb towards Snare Meadow. Two self-service aid stations provide water along the route. For relay teams, the distance is divided into three legs of 4 miles, 5.9 miles, and 3.1 miles. Runners are responsible for their own transportation to the designated exchange points. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
