About the race
The Monte Challenge is an adventure race based in Mountcharles, Co. Donegal with multiple route options on Saturday 29th August 2026. In 2025 the event raised €19,500 which was split between St Peter’s National School, St Naul’s GAA and the Bluestack Special Needs Foundation.
There are four route options:
- The Full Monte: 5.2 km run, 19.5 km cycle, 6 km mountain run, 21 km cycle, 5 km road/sand dune run.
- The Half Monte: 5.2 km run, 23 km cycle, 500 m run.
- The Sprint Monte: 5.2 km run.
- The Little Monte: 5.2 km walk/jog.
Online entries for the Full and Half Monte open in January 2026 and cannot be purchased on the day. Sprint and Little Monte entries can be purchased online or in person at registration. Race registration takes place at St Peter’s National School, Mountcharles; participants collect a colour coded bib and timing chip, undergo a mandatory kit check, and may use a bag drop at their own risk. Bib colours identify routes: blue Full, green Half, yellow Sprint.
Teams are permitted for Full and Half routes with strict role requirements and leg assignments. Cut-off points are applied on the Full Monte and will be published nearer the event. Prizes are awarded by category and medals are given at the finish. Facilities include indoor shelter or tents, refreshments, and toilets.
