Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultramarathon
The Minnesota Voyageur is a 50 mile out-and-back trail race between Carlton, MN, and Duluth, MN. The course passes through Jay Cooke State Park, provides overlooks of Lake Superior, and crosses the Swinging Bridge over the dalles of the St. Louis River. Course terrain is primarily rugged woodland singletrack with roots, rocks, and variable footing; bridges can be slippery when wet and some boards may be missing. Total ascent and descent are about 5,000 ft.
Weather at the event can vary widely; past conditions have included very hot, humid days and cool, wet days. Runners are advised to prepare for a range of conditions. The event is cup-free; aid stations do not provide paper cups, and runners should carry their own hydration vessel. Aid stations offer water, electrolyte drink, sodas, fruit, cookies, chips, and other sweet and salty options; the organizers do not supply high-carbohydrate gels, electrolyte supplement tablets, or capsules.
The race enforces aid station cutoffs and an overall 14 hour time limit. Drop bag service is available at specified aid stations; bags must be clearly labeled with name and race number and will be returned to the finish. Crew access is restricted at some locations: Hwy 210 and Peterson’s are no crew, no spectators, and other stations have designated spectating areas to reduce crowding.
In 2026 the start and finish move to the Carlton Munger Trailhead and the turnaround is extended farther into Fairmount Park to ensure a full 50 mile course. Race number pick-up and drop bag drop-off occur at the start area on race morning. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
