Meteor Mile
The Meteor Mile is a timed mile race held at Gloucestershire Airport, Staverton. The event first appeared on the Almost Athletes race calendar in 2013 and was reinstated in 2023 after a three year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic and subsequent groundwork. The organisers have run the event both traditionally on a Saturday evening at the beginning of September and on dates in late August.
The course uses the main runway and a section of support road. The first 300 metres run along the support road before a right turn onto the runway for a run of just over one kilometre toward the terminal. Runners then peel off to the right for the final 200 metres to the finish adjacent to the terminal building. Chip timing has been introduced to the event.
The event description emphasises a social and inclusive atmosphere and notes that children are encouraged to take part. Every finisher receives a bespoke medal. Prizes are awarded for the first male and first female adult and junior U15 finishers, and Almost Athletes also awards prizes to the first male and female club finishers. The Aviator bar is the venue for prize giving and post race socialising. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
