Event Overview
The Marji Gesick is an ultra-endurance mountain bike and running event in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It was established in 2015 with the goal of creating a 100-mile route connecting major trailheads across Marquette County. The event is part of an "Endurance Trilogy" of events produced by the 906 Adventure Team, a non-profit organization. A portion of entry fees goes back to local trail-building organizations.
Distances and Formats
The event features multiple race formats over a weekend in September.
- MG100RUN: A 100-mile run.
- MG100BIKE: A 100-mile mountain bike race, which includes a duathlon option called "Worst of Both Worlds."
- MG50RUN: A 50-mile run.
- MG50BIKE: A 50-mile mountain bike race.
- Mini-Marji: A shorter, unlisted distance event.
There is also an MG200 event that runs once every five years. The 100-mile bike and duathlon events begin with a 0.5-mile run (a LeMans start).
Event Philosophy and Rules
The event operates with a self-supported ethos. Organizers state they "do not hold your hand" and provide minimal on-course support. There are no official aid stations; participants must bring their own food, water, and gear. GPS units are mandatory for navigation, as the course is not fully signed. The event involves treacherous terrain, inclement weather, and inherently dangerous activities.
Practical Information
Routes are published the week of the event. All events have a final cut-off on Sunday morning. Registration transfers are allowed until August 1st, but refunds are not offered. Timing is provided by Superior Timing. Participants collect tokens at undisclosed checkpoints along the course; losing a checkpoint token results in disqualification.
The event supports and recommends several local bike shops in the Marquette and Ishpeming area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
