Machlud Cilcain Sunset Trail Race

Machlud is a sunset targeted trail half marathon around the Clwydian Hills that finishes at Ysgol y Foel school hall and field. The route skirts the Vale of Clwyd and joins the Offa’s Dyke footpath before reaching the summit of Moel Famau. The course covers just over a half marathon distance of about 21.4 km / 13.3 miles and includes approximately 750 m / 2500 ft of ascent, with most of the climb in the final 10 km.

Ninety five percent of the route is on good quality tracks and paths, with short marshalled tarmac sections to leave and re-enter the village. The course is waymarked and includes a section that is expected to require walking for many runners. The event uses staggered start times so that many runners aim to be on the high level section near sunset; sunset is not guaranteed.

Canicross entries are accepted. The route contains some stiles to navigate with dogs; a few have dog doors and most fence crossings are kissing or vehicle gates. Owners are responsible for deciding if the distance and terrain suit their dog. Dogs must be on leads at all times in the start and finish area.

Mandatory kit includes a headtorch, whistle, refillable drinks bottle or collapsible cup, foil bivvy bag and fell or trail running shoes; waterproof top and bottoms may be required. There are three main aid checkpoints with water and snacks and additional water at a further checkpoint. All runners scan timing bands at six checkpoints.
