About the race
The Leftovers Trail Run is the second annual trail event at Briar Chapel in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It takes place on Saturday, November 28, 2026, two days after Thanksgiving and the Birds of a Feather Trail Trot. Runners can choose between a 5K and a 10K.
Both courses follow a mix of undulating double-track dirt and flowy single-track through Briar Chapel’s forested trail network, starting with just under half a mile of pavement. The 5K has about 217 feet of elevation gain and measures 3.38 miles (5.4 km). The 10K has about 378 feet of elevation gain and measures 6.2 miles (10 km).
The event uses leftover race materials in an eco-conscious way. Participants select a vintage race tee, medal, and bib from past events. Youth 17 and under and seniors 65 and over have lower entry fees. Entries are limited to reduce crowding on the trails.
Registration includes chip timing, a marked course, on-course and finish aid stations, medical support, volunteer support, and free post-race photo downloads. Food and drinks after the race include items such as sliders, fresh fruit, hummus with vegetables, bagels with peanut butter, trail bars, chips, cookies, and small cups of M&Ms, along with water, sports drinks, soft drinks, and juice.
The day also features a free Kids Race for Treasure for children 11 and under, an awards ceremony with age group prizes, and contests with assorted giveaways. The staging area is Great Meadow Park at Briar Chapel. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
