Leaf Peepers Half Marathon and 5K
The Leaf Peepers event is a fall road race held in Waterbury, Vermont. The 2026 edition is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, and registration for 2026 is open. The event has been held since 1984.
The course is timed for peak fall foliage and makes a loop through downtown Waterbury before rolling along the Winooski River through Waterbury and Duxbury. Runners see changing mixed hardwood leaves with views toward the Green Mountains. The River Road course was altered after Hurricane Irene and returned to use in 2019.
The majority of the half marathon follows well maintained dirt road after a few miles of pavement at the start. The half finishes on a short section of trail along the Cross Vermont Trail and concludes on the lawn of the Vermont state Horseshoe Facility, the same area as the start. The 5K follows similar scenery with about half pavement and half dirt road and finishes over the same scenic section of trail.
