Langstrath Fell Race
The Langstrath Fell Race is organized from the Langstrath Country Inn in Stonethwaite near Keswick (CA12 5XG, GR 253136). The course is 7.5 km long with approximately 430 m of ascent. It is classified AS NS: there is less than 20% road, an average climb of at least 50 m per kilometre, the distance is under 10 km, and some navigational skill is required.
Entries are on the day only with an entry fee of £8. Entrants must complete an entry form and confirm they have read it. Parking is provided at Borrowdale CE Primary School and runners should follow marshal instructions. Registration takes place at the Langstrath Country Inn; when weather permits registration will be outside in the pub seating area, otherwise inside the bar.
The route starts outside the pub and follows the village street down to Stonethwaite Bridge, then climbs through rough underfoot sections into the wood and up to the open fell, passing a ruined peat house. Runners reach Dock Tarn where a marshal records numbers, then continue to a kissing gate marking the start of a compulsory flagged section through an SSSI. The flagged section ends at a gate, then the route goes to Watendlath, along a broad path towards Rosthwaite, and returns via a narrow path back to Stonethwaite Bridge before finishing in the village. Marshals are positioned at Dock Tarn, Watendlath and above Rosthwaite.
Participants are asked to carry FRA kit if required by the race organiser; suggested items include waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle and emergency food. Kit checks may be carried out. Prize money is offered for overall and age categories with equal awards for men and women and team prizes of chocolates for clubs with three finishers.
