Langdale Horseshoe
The Langdale Horseshoe is a fell race scheduled for 10 October 2026. The course distance is 21.1 km / 1450 m (12.5 miles / 4600 ft). Race parking and registration are near the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel at the head of the Langdale valley.
The route is mostly rocky and slippery underfoot and includes many pathless sections. October weather often reduces visibility on the fells, which makes navigation more difficult. The course includes several marked checkpoints such as Thunacar Knott, Angle Tarn, Bowfell, Crinkle Crags and Pike O’Blisco; some checkpoints have cut-off times. Competitors are expected to meet the FRA safety requirements and the event does not allow certain GPS functions for navigation in line with FRA guidance.
Entries open on 1 August via the SI entries website and are limited to 550 places; entries close at 4pm on Wednesday 7 October 2026. Entry fees are £13.50 for FRA members and £16.50 for non-FRA members; the entry fee includes a free high quality warm pie. There are no refunds, but substitutions may be made on SI entries up to the Wednesday before the race. Previous experience will be checked during entry: typically two medium or long mountainous category A non‑GPS fell races in the previous three years or equivalent mountain experience. Narrow roads are used for access, so car sharing is suggested. A cash prize of £100 is offered to a winner who breaks the standing course record.
