Lakeland Trails Helvellyn
The event is a set of trail runs and a sport trail based at Jenkins Field in Glenridding on the shores of Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. Routes use footpaths and bridleways into the foothills of Helvellyn and offer elevated views of Ullswater and surrounding peaks.
- 5 km Helvellyn Sport Trail
- 10 km Helvellyn Trail Run
- 15 km Helvellyn Trail Race
- 15 km Helvellyn Trail Challenge
All courses are well marked and marshalled. Terrain is mainly scenic trails with short sections of tarmac, graded runnable climbs and descents, and underfoot conditions that can be tricky in places. Some gates and a road crossing require care; marshals do not have authority to stop traffic.
Entry rules and limits vary by distance. The 5 km requires entrants to be at least 12 years old and has no time limit. The 10 km requires entrants to be at least 16 years old and has a two hour time limit. Both 15 km events require entrants to be at least 18 years old; the Challenge has a three and a half hour time limit and the Race has a two hour time limit. Prizes are awarded in the 10 km and in the 15 km Race only; Challenge competitors are not eligible for 15 km prizes.
Logistics and safety notes include complimentary shuttle buses from Penrith for the 15 km events, on site baggage storage by the main marquee, cash only parking arrangements at local fields, and event medics with radio cover. Competitors must collect race numbers on the day and display them horizontally. There are no water stations on course so runners must carry their own water and cup. In ear headphones are not permitted but bone conductor devices are allowed. Dogs are not allowed on the course. In poor weather a small kit list may be required including a hat, gloves and waterproofs. An event village offers kit vendors, local food stalls and a mountain rescue presence. Children under 12 can join a free on the day fun trail with a finisher medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
