Event details

The Knockmealdown Mountain Ultra takes place at Knockmealdown Mountain in County Waterford on Saturday 4 April 2026. The route starts and finishes at Mount Melleray Abbey. The course distance is 66.00 km with 2,800 m of climb. The event is rated as difficulty level 10 - Extreme. The route is not marked and GPS use is allowed. Live GPS tracking will be used.

Route, safety and kit

The course moves over mountain and rough terrain with sections of track and forest road. Organisers state there are checkpoint cut offs and an overall 12 hour race cut off; competitors who miss cut offs may be required to withdraw. Aid stations provide a mix of sweets, chocolate, Coke and water. Mandatory kit is Level C - Advanced and includes a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number, foil blanket or bivvy bag, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL water, emergency food, map and compass. Competitors must carry the required kit; random checks may be carried out and lack of kit may lead to denial of entry or disqualification.
