Event Overview
The Kick Out Mesothelioma race takes place in Portland, Maine, and serves as a memorial event for John W. Griffin. The event features two distinct distances for participants:
- 5 Miles (running race)
- 2.5 Miles (walking event)
Proceeds from the registration fees are donated to mesothelioma research. The event commemorates a former Navy veteran and city councilor who passed away in 2003 following a cancer diagnosis.
Course and Logistics
The 5-Miler is a point-to-point race starting at the intersection of Cutter Street and Eastern Promenade. The finish line is located at the Bayside Trail entrance near the sewage treatment plant on Marginal Way. The 2.5 Mile Walk starts and finishes at the same Bayside Trail entrance. Packet pickup and race-day registration are hosted at Marathon Sports on Marginal Way, located approximately 1.3 miles from the 5-mile starting point.
Recognition and Awards
Cash prizes are awarded to the top overall male and female finishers in the 5-Miler. The current course records stand at 27:13 for men and 29:50 for women, both established in 2022. Additional awards are provided for various age groups and teams, including club, corporate, and open categories. Teams must have a minimum of four members to be eligible for scoring. Participants who register by October 10th are guaranteed an event shirt. Following the completion of the distances, a post-race gathering is held at a local sports pub on Fore Street.
