KAR 1-Mile Challenge
The KAR 1-Mile Challenge is a timed one mile running event held at WMU Business Tech Innovation Park in Kalamazoo, MI on July 18, 2026. The event stages separate heats by age group, middle school, high school, and invitational categories. Heats are scheduled ten minutes apart and may be combined or split if sizes change.
High school heats are separated by personal record thresholds into two boys heats and two girls heats. Awards are given three deep in each age group and category, with special trophies for high school divisions. Prize money is offered to the top three finishers in the invitational heats: $250, $150, and $75 for first through third places in both the men's and women's invitational fields.
Team competition is open to teams of three or more. Open Teams may include any ages and genders and are scored by the age group place finishes of the top three team members, with the lowest score winning. Under Age 19 Teams require all members to be under 20 and are scored by age group finishes among specified youth divisions (12 and under, 13-15, 16-18).
Registration details list pre-registration pricing March 1 to June 18 at $30 which includes a T-shirt, a no T-shirt option for $25, registration after June 18 at $35, and a discounted price of $15 for ages 1 to 18. Early packet pickup is planned for July 17 and race day packet pickup on July 18. Timing and scoring are provided by T&H Timing with live results. Parking is available in the WMU Soccer Field lot within a half mile of the start line. Sponsors include The Mitten Running Company, Amour Physical Therapy, and Gordons Water.
